ARTIST Bio

Crystal Frias is a Brooklyn based photographer and printmaker. She was introduced at 13 years old to photography when she received her first DSLR. In high school she enrolled in an analog photography class, She spent the next three years learning the processes and mentoring classmates. She graduated with a BFA in photography and BA in English with a concentration in writing in 2018 from CUNY College of Staten Island. She is currently in CUNY Hunter college K-12 art education graduate program. She began to documenting her parent’s relationship while her mom suffered an untreated mental illness, then went on to experiment with identity with the use of self-portraiture, by revealing self displacement within one's environment and self in her work.  She uses self-portraiture and autobiographical photography as a means of researching the individual and what it means to be human in general, connecting with the medium not only visually but emotionally. When making work she often searches for identity as well as conceptualizes how who we are as individuals all lies on what we experience, who we surround ourselves with, how we cope, and where we come from. She uses photography as a way to research herself in particular, specifically the individual and how it feels to put yourself in different places and situations, and how they affect you or become a part of who you are.
